This is an illustrated book of the Bible in Vulgate. The Biblia Sacra was published in 1969 by Rizzoli of Rome. The lithographs are on a heavy paper and are signed in the plate. The Biblia Sacra lithographs were produced as illustrations for a new edition of the Bible. The Biblia Sacra suite consists of 105 color mixed-technique lithographs after 105 watercolor paintings created by Dali between 1963 and 1964. The Biblia Sacra works are a combination of offset lithography, continuous tone lithography, serigraphy (silkscreening) with application of varnishes and metallic inks. The works were “printed” on a heavy stock designed specifically to hold up to the various techniques used. Quality craftsmanship and artistry are evident in every Biblia Sacra work. The unique combination of multiple printing techniques gives these illustrations a richness and depth that resulted in works that are exceptionally true to the original paintings.

  • The story of Ruth is a beautiful narrative found in the Book of Ruth. Ruth, a Moabite woman, becomes part of the lineage of King David, and later, the genealogy of Jesus Christ. The key events include Ruth's loyalty to her mother-in-law, Naomi, and her eventual marriage to Boaz, which leads to her becoming the great-grandmother of David.

    Ruth 1:16-17, 4:13-17
Ruth's pledge of loyalty to Naomi:
“But Ruth replied, ‘Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.’” (Ruth 1:16-17)

Ruth and Boaz's marriage and the birth of Obed:
“So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. Then he went to her, and the Lord enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son. The women said to Naomi: ‘Praise be to the Lord, who this day has not left you without a guardian-redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel! He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.’ Then Naomi took the child in her arms and cared for him. The women living there said, ‘Naomi has a son!’ And they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.”

    Dalí’s Interpretation in Sacra Biblia
Dalí  would transform the story of Ruth into a dreamlike narrative, focusing on the divine intervention in Ruth’s life, the mystical transformation of Naomi, and the cosmic significance of Obed's birth. The characters would be depicted in abstract and symbolic forms, with an emphasis on light, transformation, and divine providence, making the story feel timeless and otherworldly.
