This phrase comes from the Book of Job, specifically Job 1:6. The passage describes a meeting in heaven where the sons of God (often interpreted as angelic beings) present themselves before the Lord. During this meeting, Satan appears as one of them, suggesting that he too is among the heavenly assembly.
The full verse reads:
“Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them.” (Job 1:6, KJV)
This moment is significant because it introduces Satan in a very different light than typically depicted in later Christian theology. Rather than being a rebellious force cast out of heaven, Satan is shown here as part of the divine court, allowed to test the faithfulness of humanity. The interaction sets the stage for the trials that Job will endure. Satan’s presence in this heavenly council emphasizes the complex relationship between good and evil, and the role of suffering in the divine plan.
Dalí’s Interpretation in Sacra Biblia
Dalí’s interpretation would focus on the psychological tension of the passage, using surreal imagery to explore the duality between divine purity and the presence of evil, the mystery of divine testing, and the cosmic struggle between good and evil.
