It is a striking and symbolic image found in the Book of Isaiah. This image is part of the prophetic vision in Isaiah 11, where the peaceful kingdom of the future is described. It symbolizes the reconciliation of natural enemies and a time of universal peace under the reign of the Messiah. This passage is often understood as describing a time of peace when even the fiercest of creatures will live in harmony with others, and all will live in safety and mutual respect.
Biblical Passage: Isaiah 11:6-7 (KJV)
"The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox."
This passage from Isaiah 11 describes the peaceful kingdom under the reign of the Messiah. It envisions a time when natural enemies, like the lion and the ox, will live in harmony. The most ferocious creatures, symbolized by the lion, will change their nature and behavior to peacefully coexist with gentler animals, like the ox.
Dalí’s Interpretation in Sacra Biblia
In Salvador Dalí’s surrealist interpretation, he would likely explore the peaceful, transformative nature of the Messiah's reign through surreal and dreamlike imagery. Dalí would depict the lion and ox in unnatural harmony, possibly using distorted shapes and fragmented landscapes to symbolize the impossibility of such peace without divine intervention. The child leading the animals would likely be depicted as a radiant, transcendent figure, symbolizing the Messiah. Dalí’s portrayal would invite the viewer to reflect on the cosmic and spiritual transformation that peace and reconciliation under God’s reign would bring to the world.
