This is an illustrated book of the Bible in Vulgate. The Biblia Sacra was published in 1969 by Rizzoli of Rome. The lithographs are on a heavy paper and are signed in the plate. The Biblia Sacra lithographs were produced as illustrations for a new edition of the Bible. The Biblia Sacra suite consists of 105 color mixed-technique lithographs after 105 watercolor paintings created by Dali between 1963 and 1964. The Biblia Sacra works are a combination of offset lithography, continuous tone lithography, serigraphy (silkscreening) with application of varnishes and metallic inks. The works were “printed” on a heavy stock designed specifically to hold up to the various techniques used. Quality craftsmanship and artistry are evident in every Biblia Sacra work. The unique combination of multiple printing techniques gives these illustrations a richness and depth that resulted in works that are exceptionally true to the original paintings.

  • It is found in the Book of Jeremiah and is part of God's calling of the prophet Jeremiah. It signifies God's divine selection and consecration of Jeremiah even before his birth, highlighting God's sovereignty and predestination in choosing individuals for His purposes.

    Biblical Passage: Jeremiah 1:5 (KJV)
"Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations."

This passage is part of the calling of Jeremiah when God speaks to him, explaining that he was chosen by God for a special purpose before his birth. The verse expresses the idea of divine election, where God knew Jeremiah intimately and had set him apart for a significant mission even before his physical formation.

    Dalí’s Interpretation in Sacra Biblia
In Salvador Dalí’s surrealist interpretation, the focus would be on the timeless, divine plan that existed for Jeremiah before his physical birth. Dalí would use cosmic, ethereal imagery to convey the pre-existence of God’s knowledge and the sanctification of the prophet. The dreamlike and disjointed forms would emphasize that Jeremiah’s destiny as a prophet was part of a larger divine plan that transcends human understanding of time. The spiritual transformation of Jeremiah and the mystical elements of his calling would be depicted through light, surreal landscapes, and fragmented forms, symbolizing that God’s will for Jeremiah’s life was set before his birth, a divine plan unfolding in eternity.
