This refers to the moment in the Gospel of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, where Jesus undergoes baptism at the hands of John the Baptist in the Jordan River. This event marks a significant moment in the life of Jesus and in Christian theology. It is often seen as the start of His public ministry.
Biblical Verse: Matthew 3:13-17 (KJV):
"Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he suffered him. And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
Dalí’s Interpretation in Sacra Biblia
Dalí’s portrayal of Jesus’ baptism would emphasize the divine confirmation of Jesus as the Son of God. Using surreal elements like melting forms, ethereal light, and symbolic distortions, Dalí would likely focus on the mystical nature of the event. The Holy Spirit as a dove, the heavens opening, and the voice from the Father would be depicted with surreal imagery that blends both the physical and spiritual realms. The event would be shown as both a moment in time and an eternal truth, marking the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry and the fulfillment of God’s divine plan for salvation.
