This is an illustrated book of the Bible in Vulgate. The Biblia Sacra was published in 1969 by Rizzoli of Rome. The lithographs are on a heavy paper and are signed in the plate. The Biblia Sacra lithographs were produced as illustrations for a new edition of the Bible. The Biblia Sacra suite consists of 105 color mixed-technique lithographs after 105 watercolor paintings created by Dali between 1963 and 1964. The Biblia Sacra works are a combination of offset lithography, continuous tone lithography, serigraphy (silkscreening) with application of varnishes and metallic inks. The works were “printed” on a heavy stock designed specifically to hold up to the various techniques used. Quality craftsmanship and artistry are evident in every Biblia Sacra work. The unique combination of multiple printing techniques gives these illustrations a richness and depth that resulted in works that are exceptionally true to the original paintings.

  • Ruth 4:10-13

The phrase “May He Himself Join You in Marriage” is part of a larger narrative in the Book of Ruth, specifically in Ruth 4:10-13. This occurs when Boaz, a wealthy relative of Ruth's deceased husband, agrees to marry her in order to fulfill the Levirate marriage law. This law stated that a man should marry his brother’s widow to preserve the family line. Boaz takes on this responsibility, acting as a kinsman redeemer, and he expresses his wish that Ruth and he may be blessed with children.

    Here is the specific passage:

“Moreover, I have acquired Ruth the Moabite, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, to maintain the name of the dead with his property, so that his name will not disappear from among his family or from his hometown. Today you are witnesses!”
Then the elders and all the people at the gate said, “We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the family of Israel. May you have standing in Ephrathah and be famous in Bethlehem. Through the offspring the Lord gives you by this young woman, may your family be like that of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah.”
So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. Then he went to her, and the Lord enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son.”

This passage focuses on the blessing and marriage of Boaz and Ruth. Their union is one of redemption, both spiritually and socially, as it fulfills God’s will for the family line of Naomi and her deceased husband. The elders of Bethlehem bless the union, likening Ruth to the matriarchs Rachel and Leah, and praying that Ruth and Boaz’s child will continue the family’s lineage in the tradition of their ancestors.

    Dalí’s Interpretation in Sacra Biblia
In Dalí’s interpretation , " the painting would be filled with surrealist elements, blending divine and earthly imagery to reflect the redemptive and blessed nature of Boaz and Ruth’s marriage. Through fluid forms, radiant light, and dream-like landscapes, Dalí would portray their union as a divine intervention that brings about continuity, redemption, and blessing.
