It is a symbolic reference that may not be found as a specific biblical passage but could evoke imagery related to building, craftsmanship, and the creation of God's kingdom. The mason's trowel is a tool associated with construction and laying the foundation of a building, which could be used metaphorically to represent God's work in establishing or rebuilding the spiritual lives of His people.
There are several references to building, foundation, and the role of craftsmen in the creation of sacred spaces, particularly in relation to temples or structures that honor God.
Exodus 31:3-5 (NIV) talks about the craftsman Bezalel being filled with the Spirit of God to make beautiful things for the Tabernacle:
"I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills— to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver, and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts."
Matthew 7:24-27 (The Parable of the Wise and Foolish Builders) speaks of building on a firm foundation, symbolizing the importance of solid spiritual practices:
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock."
The idea of God holding a mason's trowel could symbolize God's role as the divine builder, creating or rebuilding the foundations of the world or of individuals' lives, using His spiritual tools to establish a firm foundation of faith.
Dalí’s Interpretation in Sacra Biblia
In Salvador Dalí’s surrealist interpretation, "A Mason’s Trowel in the Hand of the Lord" would be a striking representation of divine craftsmanship and the creation of both the physical world and the spiritual realm. The trowel could appear as a floating, glowing object, symbolizing God's power and precision in shaping reality. The image might be filled with surreal landscapes, disjointed forms, and cosmic architecture, showing that God is eternally at work, building, restoring, and transforming humanity and creation. Dalí’s focus would be on the eternal and timeless nature of God’s work, using dreamlike and impossible structures to convey the idea that God’s creative power transcends human understanding.
