Genesis 17:1-5
“When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless. Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.’ Abram fell facedown, and God said to him, ‘As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations. No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations. I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.’” (Genesis 17:1-5)
In this passage, God makes a covenant with Abram, changing his name to Abraham, meaning “father of many nations.” At ninety-nine years old, Abraham receives this promise of a multitude of descendants, including nations and kings. This is a pivotal moment in the Bible where God promises that Abraham will become the father of a great and diverse lineage, which will eventually be fulfilled through the Israelites and other nations. The covenant is not just about physical descendants but also a spiritual promise of the people who will come from Abraham’s line.
Dalí’s Interpretation in Sacra Biblia
Dalí invites deep reflection on the cosmic, spiritual, and eternal nature of the promise made by God. Through his use of fluid forms, cosmic imagery, and surreal symbolism, Dalí captures the essence of Abraham’s transformation into the father of many nations and the divine power that shapes the future of the world. This interpretation focuses on the mystical and eternal aspects of the story, offering a thought-provoking perspective on the significance of Abraham’s faith and the promises made to him.
