This is an illustrated book of the Bible in Vulgate. The Biblia Sacra was published in 1969 by Rizzoli of Rome. The lithographs are on a heavy paper and are signed in the plate. The Biblia Sacra lithographs were produced as illustrations for a new edition of the Bible. The Biblia Sacra suite consists of 105 color mixed-technique lithographs after 105 watercolor paintings created by Dali between 1963 and 1964. The Biblia Sacra works are a combination of offset lithography, continuous tone lithography, serigraphy (silkscreening) with application of varnishes and metallic inks. The works were “printed” on a heavy stock designed specifically to hold up to the various techniques used. Quality craftsmanship and artistry are evident in every Biblia Sacra work. The unique combination of multiple printing techniques gives these illustrations a richness and depth that resulted in works that are exceptionally true to the original paintings.

  • The Beatitudes are a collection of teachings of Jesus that appear in the Gospel of Matthew (5:3-12) and the Gospel of Luke (6:20-23). They form part of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount and outline the attitudes and characteristics that are blessed by God and lead to the kingdom of heaven. The Beatitudes are a powerful proclamation of God's favor on those who embody spiritual humility, mercy, and purity, despite the difficulties and challenges they may face in this life.

Here are the Beatitudes from the Gospel of Matthew (5:3-12), which Dalí may have visually interpreted in a surreal way:

    Matthew's Beatitudes:
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted."
"Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth."
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled."
"Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy."
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God."
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God."
"Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
"Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you."

    Dalí’s Interpretation in Sacra Biblia
Dalí’s surreal interpretation would transform these spiritual teachings into a visionary, dreamlike landscape where cosmic and psychological forces are at play. He would blend elements of light, shadow, and melting forms to depict the paradoxical nature of divine blessings and the transcendent rewards promised to the humble, the merciful, the meek, and the persecuted.
